Module #03. If I had a Hammer !(Songs)

Once you learn the simple memorization technique in this module you will be able to see the entire song in a single glance.

The skill of being able to switch back and forth from MACRO to MICRO VIEW is one you probably already have- in a context different to the one in this module. REFINE it HERE as you kiss that karaoke machine goodbye and learn the lyrics to one of the most popular songs of all time. Already sung by hundreds of the top world artists, this song is waiting for you now. It's now YOUR turn to take the stage and get under the spotlight.

Part 2: FLUENCY thru DRILLS

The
If you can SAY it,
you can HEAR it
Exercises

Drill #1: Disappearing vowels

When the phrase "If I had a hammer..." is spoken quickly the "ɪ" in "ɪf" disappears and we often hear ONLY "faɪ" i.e. ɪf aɪ hæd ə ˈhæmə/ becomes faɪ hædə ˈhæmə/. Notice how the same thing happens with the "h" also."hædə"becomes "ædə"

If you're a native speaker of Vietnamese, match the Vietnamese words in the box below with their English equivalents.

se>>>> Phai as in Cubism

máy bay . bia . cà vạt' . bánh . trò đùa chơi
Đoản Ca . bò . sách . thuyền . bóng . giống

ball seed tanka cow book boat
beer tie cake joke plane game

drill#1

.

Listen to the following phrases once and repeat until you can duplicate exactly. On the first repeat, READ the phrase if necessary. On subsequent repeats, DO NOT read it.

If I had a ball,
If I had a seed,
If I had a tanka,
If I had a cow,
If I had a book,
If I had a boat,
If I had a beer,
If I had a tie,
If I had a cake,
If I had a joke,
If I had a plane,
If I had a game,

Drill #2: Disappearing consonants (dropping the 'h')

When the phrase "If he had a hammer..." is spoken quickly, the "h" is often dropped and /ɪf hiː hæd ə ˈhæmə/ becomes /ɪfiː hædə ˈhæmə/ ie. the "h" in "hiː" disappears and we hear "ɪfiː" NOT "ɪf hiː" Notice how the same thing happens in the phrases below. NOTE: In some you can also hardly hear the "ɪ" in "ɪfiː" Listen to the following phrases once and repeat until you can duplicate exactly. On the first repeat, READ the phrase if necessary. On the subsequent repeats, DO NOT read it.

DOWNLOAD DRILL #2
If he had a ball,

If he had a tanka,
If he had a cow,
If he had a book,
If he had a boat,
If he had a beer,
If he had a tie,
If he had a cake,
If he had a joke,
If he had a plane,
If he had a game,

Drill #3: Consonant and Vowel Linking

When there is a final consonant sound of one word and a vowel sound at the beginning of the next. eg When the phrase: "If he had a hammer, he'd hammer in the morning..." is spoken quickly, the "h" is often dropped and /ɪf aɪ həd ə ˈhæmə aɪd ˈhæmə ɪn ðə ˈmɔːnɪŋ/ becomes /ɪfaɪ hædə ˈhæmə aɪd ˈhæmə(r)ɪn ðə ˈmɔːnɪŋ/.

Notice how "ɪf aɪ" becomes "ɪfaɪ" OR "faɪ"; "hæd ə" becomes "hædə"; and "hæmə ɪn" becomes "hæmərɪn" (an "r" ).

Part 1: Match the following nouns in BOX A to a corresponding verb in BOX B.

A

ball
book

seed
boat

beer
plane
